Course no obstacle for tough mums

LISA Greedy and Susan Polsen are both 40 years old and have four kids.

But that is not all they have in common.

Along with Ann Pursey and Chrissy Hancock, the Grafton mums have signed a "death waiver" and are preparing to do battle with an obstacle course from hell.

With 20 kilometres worth of mud and obstacles, including live electrical wires, fire, barbed wire and ice pools, the Tough Mudder event planned for September 22 this year is not going to be an ordinary mothers' meeting.

A total of 150,000 male and female fitness freaks of all ages competed in events the world over last year, with the Tough Mudder franchise coming to Australia for the first time this year.

Such is the enormity of the challenge, organisers have a free tattoo artist at the end of the route to help anyone wanting to commemorate their achievement permanently.

"I'm really looking forward to the challenge, but sometimes when I watch the YouTube videos of past events I get a bit apprehensive," Greedy said.

"I figure that rather go through a mid-life crisis I'd rather take on some challenges.

"I shaved my hair last month during the Shave For A Cure and raised $1700.

"The Tough Mudder event is just another challenge to conquer, although I must admit I'm not looking forward to running through live electrical wires."

Polsen, winner of the Grafton Rotary Biggest Loser Challenge in 2010 with a weight loss of 11 kilograms in 12 weeks, is also pumped for a new challenge.

"I think I've got to a point in my life where I've been a mum for so long that I just wanted to do something for myself," Polsen said.

"The best thing about all the training I've done in the last few years has been all the fun and camaraderie you feel. Everyone is there to help each other out and the gym community begins to feel like a second family."

And the group of 30 Clarence Valley residents entered to tackle the course near Gosford in September are going to need to stick together.

"When you enter as a team you all work together to get everyone to the finish line," Greedy, whose husband James is also taking the challenge, said.

"We hope everyone sticks together. The kids are a bit concerned about who will look after them if we don't make it."
