SPRING Grove apprentice mechanic Tom Rann will get his chance to impress heavyweights of the V8 Supercar series, Ford Performance Racing (FPR), after being hand-picked in the top five of the Telstra Racing Recruits competition.
The 21-year-old will fly out next week, bound for Ford Performance Racing's Melbourne headquarters, looking to impress the hierarchy of the Factory Ford V8 Supercar team.
The third-year apprentice will pit his skills against those of four other competitors over a gruelling two-day trial.
The recruits will be put through their paces in a series of panel interviews and practical assessments, where their ability to work within a highly skilled V8 Supercar team environment will betested.
Following the two-day trial, the top two apprentices selected will go on to experience racing conditions as part of FPR's team in the second last round of this year's championship at Winton Motor Raceway next week (November 16 to 18).
Rann said excitement had been building since he knew he was getting the chance of a lifetime in a sport he loves.
"The nerves have been building ever since I applied for the chance to become the Telstra Racing Recruit and I was so happy to receive the call to let me know that I was through to the top five," he said.
Meeting his idols, FPR drivers Mark Winterbottom and Will Davison will be a highlight for the motoring fan.
"It will be a real eye-opener to meet the FPR team and take a look around the garage and cars," he said. "And I can't wait to get among the whole experience and demonstrate my passion for V8s."
The top two apprentices will battle it out at the Winton V8 Supercar round to see who will be crowned Telstra Racing Recruit of 2012.
The winner will be announced a week before the final round of the V8 Supercars, the Sydney 500 from November 30 to December 2.
