IT seemed like a massive gamble, but for Chris Griffin the bold move paid off.

Chris used yesterday's Morning Bulletin to get down on one knee and propose to his girlfriend, Natasha Askin.

Natasha lives in Calliope, while Chris lives in Gracemere.

The first Natasha knew of Chris' gallant idea was when she opened the newspaper and saw him with a beautiful ring.

"I didn't actually see his picture at first," she said.

"I saw the news story next to it, which was '2000 job cuts', because I was still half asleep.

"So, I was reading that first, and then I saw his picture."

Chris said yesterday his very public proposal went according to plan.

"It went really well," he said.

"She rang me about five past six this morning.

"Her best friend went around with the paper and gave it to her.

"Somewhere in between her sobbing she said yes.

"I don't think she really knew what to say."

Natasha literally had no idea what was coming.

"I didn't expect it at all, so it was a really good surprise," she said.

Natasha said the proposal, while unusual, was not entirely unexpected.

"I didn't know he was going to propose, but I think I've been putting the hard word on him for a little while," she joked.

When The Observer spoke to Natasha yesterday, she still hadn't received a ring from Chris.

However, by the time readers see this story, the ring will be firmly on her finger.

Chris was due to drive down to Calliope last night to complete his proposal duties.

Natasha is pregnant and said she was thrilled to be spending the rest of her life with Chris.

As for Chris, his chivalrous appearance in the newspaper has led to some jibes, but was well worth the plunge.

"I've certainly been copping it today from all my mates and everyone at work.

"The newspaper clipping may or may not be hanging up on the office door, but I wouldn't have wanted it any other way."
