FORMER Treasurer Wayne Swan spent last Sunday at Byron Community Centre lending support to local Labor hopeful Paul Spooner.

Mr Spooner is campaigning for preselection in the state seat of Ballina with current member Don Page stepping down in March 2015.

Mr Swan was in town promoting his new book The Good Fight: Six years, two prime ministers and staring down the Great Recession

Aside from talking politics Mr Swan also swapped surfing stories with well known local surfer Rusty Miller.

Mr Swan also met with locals to discuss the Ballina Labor community preselection process.

The trial primary style pre-selection will allow members of the public to vote alongside local branch members for their Labor candidate in several seats across NSW.

"The community preselection process demonstrates that the Labor party wants to listen to the electors of Ballina," said Mr Swan.

"We are the party that is genuine about finding the best community candidate to take to the next State election; Mr Spooner is one such candidate."

Mr Spooner said information on the process would be direct mailed out to the electorate on September 1.

"We are making history being the first regional area in Australia to have this opportunity," Mr Spooner said.
