LOCAL surf legend Max Pendergast is taking surf safety education into his own hands and has started a Facebook page dedicated to spreading the word on how to stay safe on our coast's beaches.

The new page, Surf Safe Byron, includes tips from the well-known surfer along with cartoons from colouring books he and his wife Yvonne have created.

"My contribution to this site is aimed primarily at kids, up to about 10 to 12 years," he said on the page.

"It will be orientated towards surf safety with hints and tips from some of the elders of surfing - a bit of fun here and there - but no negative stuff.

"I am passionate about teaching them young about water/ocean safety because they listen and remember. Once they reach their teens, they figure they know everything.

"For the past 20 years my wife Yvonne and I have run a little surf meet called Byron Bay Future Legends in conjunction with the annual Malibu Classic.

"Each year I have written and illustrated a colouring book aimed at subtly teaching them all we can from our combined 100 years as water man and woman."

Mr Pendergast said the Facebook page would have daily surf checks as well as printable colour-in cartoons for kids, sharing "tips and facts" about surf safety.
