Lennox Head closed after shark spotted off beach

AN UNCONFIRMED sighting of a "large shark" at Lennox Head and another at Brunswick Heads that had the beach closed for a short time yesterday morning are the latest in a series of sightings in the region recently.

Surf Life Saving Far North Coast emergency services co-ordinator Jimmy Keogh said it had been particularly busy in the past few days.

"I think there's a bit of media hype; people are looking for sharks. Some of the sightings during the week have been found to be dolphins. People see a fin and alarm bells start ringing and they fear the worst, but on closer investigation by our lifesavers, they found dolphins in the area," he said.

Mr Keogh said surfers reported seeing a shark at the Cosy Corner end of Tallow Beach at Byron Bay on Saturday morning. But it was 45 minutes until it was reported to lifeguards, who failed to find anything so the beach was not closed.

On Sunday the beach at Cudgen was closed twice after two sharks were sighted in the area.

Surf lifesavers on a jet ski patrol also spotted a two-metre shark at Tyagarah on Sunday around 2.15pm. It was about 150 metres from the shore and swimmers were advised. However, the shark was later seen 400 metres from shore heading for deep water.

Then on Monday a shark was reported at Lennox Head around 10.50am. Surf lifesavers warned swimmers and users of marine vessels, but as they could not confirm the sighting, the beach was not closed.

Brunswick Heads Beach was closed at 11.50am and reopened at 12pm.

Mr Keogh speculated that high water temperatures and dirty water from rivers were bringing food in, which was why there had been so many sightings.
