Four-metre Great White spotted off Ballina

UPDATE: A LARGE Great White shark was spotted off Ballina's South Wall yesterday afternoon sparking the first response of a new shark protocol.

Richmond LAC police confirmed the sighting of the four-metre shark on Facebook.

About 4pm police responded to reports of an aerial sighting of a white shark off South Ballina.

Surf Life Saving Far North Coast duty officer Jimmy Keough said police and life savers alerted several surfers in the water.

The Ballina Jet Boat was launched to find the shark.

Despite a search, the shark wasn't spotted again by life savers, police or the jet boat.

INITIAL REPORT: POLICE, life savers and the Ballina Jet Boat are responding to reports of a shark sighting near Ballina's South Wall.

Surf Life Saving Far North Coast duty officer Jimmy Keough said a group of surfers reported seeing a shark about 3.30pm.

Mr Keough said this was the first time the new triple-0 protocol developed at Wednesdays shark strategy meeting had been implemented.

The Jet Boat is on its way to the scene.

No surfers or swimmers were attacked.

The new triple-0 protocol was implemented to obtain statistics of shark sightings so the best coordinated emergency response can be activated.
