Selling to public brings result

Kylie and Darrin Pateman, from Homegrown Health, are meeting a need for organic food in Toowoomba.
Kylie and Darrin Pateman, from Homegrown Health, are meeting a need for organic food in Toowoomba.

BY selling their produce direct to the public, Darrin and Kylie Pateman's business has certainly grown over the past few years.

The Patemans are the owners of Homegrown Health, a certified organic farm at Cabarlah, 25 minutes north of Toowoomba.

"Our passion and business is growing and selling fresh, seasonal organic produce," Mr Pateman said.

"We not only grow a lot of what we sell, we also support local and trusted organic farmers by selling their produce through our business."

Homegrown Health is truly a family affair.

"We pride ourselves on being a family owned and operated business," Mr Pateman said.

"We have three young daughters who assist in all aspects of the business from growing, packing and selling," he said.

Mr Pateman said the produce was sold to Brisbane organic distribution warehouses, and the family had a permanent stall at the Sunday PCYC markets.

"This year has proved to be a very successful and busy year for us with the addition of our home delivery service," Mr Pateman said.

"We are certainly seeing a big push towards organic produce.

"There is definitely a big difference between produce and fresh organic produce," he said.

Mr Pateman said the inspiration to open up the business came from the desire to be self-sufficient.

"We started producing more than we needed so we began selling to the public at the local markets.

"It was there that we realised there was a big gap in the market for local, fresh organic produce in Toowoomba."

Mr Pateman said it did not really feel like he was a small business operator.

"I guess we do not feel that we ever actually opened our business," he said.

"It just really evolved and that is one of the best aspects of what we do."

He said one of the best aspects of the business was the chance to interact with people from all walks of life.

"We both really enjoy interacting with the public and it is really fantastic to be able to build a relationship with them," Mr Pateman said.

"We want to give our customers the full organic experience, not just a bunch of fruit and vegetables in a box."

The best piece of advice Mr Pateman has for those who are looking to enter the world of business is to ensure you are passionate about what you are doing.

"Make sure you choose an industry that you are passionate about.

"It is the key to providing an excellent service to your customers and ultimately business success," Mr Pateman said.
