Resorts still attracting tourists

Aanuka Beach Resort on the Coffs Coast is looking forward to a buoyant Christmas holiday period.
Aanuka Beach Resort on the Coffs Coast is looking forward to a buoyant Christmas holiday period.

ONE of Australia's largest resort groups, owning and operating Aanuka Beach Resort, says it has experienced resurgence in domestic tourism ahead of the Christmas holidays.

The Mantra Group, comprising Peppers, Mantra and Break Free hotels, resorts and apartments has defied any leisure travel slowdown, reporting an $8.3 million profit increase for the current financial year.

Mantra says it is on track for a "buoyant" Christmas period, particularly in Queensland where it is the largest accommodation provider with more than 50 properties.

Chief executive officer Bob East said a 3.9% increase in accommodation bookings over the past 12 months shows a return to Australians holidaying domestically.

Mr East said the spike in bookings should continue, with the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Far North Queensland and Coffs Coast showing strong occupancies over the Christmas holidays.

"Without doubt our association and strong marketing campaign with Pat Rafter has helped bring the Great Australian Holiday to the forefront and despite an attractive exchange rate, more Australians are holidaying at home, which is great to see for the industry," Mr East said.
