9.40am: A LIGHT aircraft has crashed at a private runway at Knockrow this morning, trapping the sole passenger.

The passenger, a 73-year-old Ballina man, was trapped upside down and unconscious in the aircraft.

A Rural Fire Service spokesman said the aircraft came down nose first through trees near Martins Lane.

"The passenger is trapped by the legs," he said. "(He is) unconscious and upside down."

Emergency services received the call just before 9am this morning.
