Peppers slowly come to the boil at Big Day Out

Patrick Gorbunovs

FANS will have mixed responses of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' set at yesterday's Big Day Out on the Gold Coast.

Closing the Blue Stage, the Los Angeles rockers set was marred by sound problems.

That is unless you stood on the Otherside, to the left of stage, where Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith and Josh Klinghoffer could be heard in all their 'greatest hits' glory.

While the band appear to have lost none of their energy in almost 30 years, it was Flea's energetic performance stealing the limelight and holding the crowd through to the end of a three-song encore including Suck My Kiss, I Could Have Lied and Give It Away from 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

Earlier on the Orange Stage The Killers put on an impressive show complete with fireworks and lightning bolt confetti cannons.

Opening with Mr. Brightside, the American four-piece added a local flavour to their set with a cover of the Crowded House classic Don't Dream It's Over before ending the set with When You Were Young from their 2006 album Sam's Town.

Rain clouds loomed over the event late in the afternoon, but the threat soon passed making both punters and artists happy reaching a bearable top of 28C in comparison to the scorching heat of Sydney's event on Friday, 46C.

Gold Coast Police were pleased overall with the behaviour of the crowd, despite making 27 arrests.

Punters were greeted with a heavy drug dog presence, which resulted in 45 people being found in possession of drugs including cannabis and ecstasy.

Yesterday's event marks the last in a 19-year history of the Big Day Out at Gold Coast Parklands.

Organisers have confirmed the event will remain on the Gold Coast, however the exact location is yet to be announced.
