Film award nomination on heels of Mullum Music Fest gong

LAST week was a big one for Mullumbimby's Megan Donnelly.

First she won director's pick for the Mullum Music Festival's mentorship program and will perform at the opening night of the Mullumbimby Music Festival.

Then she learned her school film project, Leave Me, had been selected as a nominee in the 19th Bond University Film & Television Awards (BUFTA) in the music video category.

Bond University created this competition to encourage Year 11 and 12 students across the nation to pursue their passion in the film and television industry. The film she created while completing Year 12 studies at Mullumbimby High School was just one of 18 selected from 175 entries and she is in the running to win the People's Choice Award.

"I didn't expect to get in because I did not have the same state-of-the-art equipment that the other entrants had," she said.

The aspiring singer and filmmaker also draws inspiration from that other well known Mullumbimby export, Iggy Azalea.

"I get inspiration from the strength and energy she showed to get up there and get out in the world and do it," Megan said.

"Mullumbimby is a great place to live and the Byron Shire is so full of people with talent and so many artists, it's a very inspirational place."

Megan is in the running to win a full scholarship to study a Bachelor of Film and Television at Bond and is also in the running for People's Choice.

Voting is open until November 21.
