IMPORTANT questions remain about the death of Australian man Ben Zygier, Greens Leader Christine Milne said.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr said on Wednesday ASIO had no evidence to suggest Mr Zygier, known as Prisoner X, was involved in the assassination of an Hamas agent in Dubai in 2010.

He also criticised the Department of Foreign Affairs' response to Mr Zygier's death in an Israeli prison later that year.

Senator Carr said he was awaiting reports from the Israeli Government on the matter.

"Minister Carr needs to answer whether he has sought the judge's report from the Israeli Government on the circumstances surrounding Ben Zygier's death, and the suggested negligence of the prison officers involved," Senator Milne said.

"He had not said either whether he has asked for the footage from the cell over the critical period which demonstrates how someone could commit suicide in a suicide-proof cell.

"When will Minister Carr pursue the Israeli Government on these matters? And when will Stephen Smith come clean on what he was told at the time by his own department, and whether or not he told then-Prime Minister Rudd what was going on."
