Locals delve into old sounds with a fresh approach

LOCAL TALENT: Great Places.
LOCAL TALENT: Great Places.

GREAT Places is a new band of 1960's rock music based in Melbourne but formed by Byron Bay former residents Griffin Brain (guitar and vocals), Paddy Martinkus (drums and vocals) and Sam Jemsek (bass) .

After their first local gig last weekend at the Great Northern Hotel, we sat with Griffin Brain to chat about the new music from these artists known in Byron Bay for their hip hop music.

Why did you choose the 1960's rock style?

We love The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, and the clean sounds of the 1960s. We love the vibe it gives off and the style. We also love country rhythms. Our goal is to strip back and remove the slack-jawed yokel out of country music and add the rock'n'roll attitude.

Did the other members of the band come from other music genres too?

Yeah. We are all very loose when it comes to the music we like. I was a rapper in the past but now the passion I have found for the guitar has taken over for now.

What is your next move?

We've got our second single and our first EP all written, we're just saving some money to record them the way we want.
