Lismore animal-rights protest
A GROUP of animal rights activists have gathered outside Lismore Court House to protest against animal cruelty.
The protest coincides with a hearing within the Lismore Local Court over alleged mistreatment of horses at Rosebank.
The protesters are also unhappy about laws surrounding animal cruelty, which some argue require too great a burden-of-proof to properly enforce.
The same issue came up early this year when a puppy was found close to death at the Woodenbong tip after being bashed and dumped in a garbage bin.
In that case, which was in no way related to the case being heard at the court today, there were claims that the perpetrator of the crime was known but could not be prosecuted because no-one had seen him do it.
However, the RSPCA, which investigates and prosecutes animal cruelty, repeatedly said it did not know who had attacked the puppy.
