Mate against mate: Lennox surfers face off in Quiksilver Pro

LENNOX Head surfers Owen Wright and Adam Melling will square off in the first round heats of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast when the World Surf League season starts on Saturday.

Wright finished 12th in the rankings last year and Melling 24th.

The other competitor in their three-man heat is American Nat Young, ranked 13th.

Defending champion Gabriel Medina of Brazil has drawn countryman Wiggolly Dantas and a qualifier in the first round.

Medina last year became the first Brazilian to claim the world surfing title in the sport's near-40-year history and the first 20-year-old to do so since American surfing legend Kelly Slater in 1992.

Running in conjunction with the Quiksilver Pro will be the world's best female surfers in the Roxy Pro Gold Coast.

They include Stephanie Gilmore (Kingscliff) and Tyler Wright (Lennox Head).
