Course to cut practice hours

CLARENCE Valley learner-drivers will have the option of practising for 20 hours less if they complete a driver-safety training course, the O'Farrell government announced on Monday.

Currently learner drivers are required to complete 120 hours of supervised practice before they are allowed to sit for their P1 licence.

Under the plan approved by State cabinet, L-platers under 25 will only have to complete 100 hours if they successfully complete the driver training.

Roads Minister Duncan Gay said he was pleased the government was on its way to developing the course.

"Sadly, young people are over-represented in fatalities related to speeding and poor decision making while driving," Mr Gay said.

"This will give young and inexperienced drivers the opportunity to have hands-on practice with experienced instructors."

Big River Driving School owner Kevin Whalan said any additional training learner-drivers have with a professional driving instructor was going to be of benefit.
