UPDATE - NOON: CLARENCE Valley and Coffs Harbour police were keeping a key eye out last night for an allegedly stolen unmarked QLD Police car, a silver Subaru WRX Turbo (QLD Reg 052-LWB) which was reported speeding through the Coffs Harbour CBD, southbound near Park Ave at about 2pm swerving wildly across the Pacific Hwy.

Grafton police confirmed they were on the lookout but there were no indications the car was in the Clarence Valley.

The car was reported stolen on Tuesday and there are indications it may have firearms on board.

The WRX has not been found so far despite extensive searches through the night.

The theft was linked to the alleged theft of a stolen black Ford Mondeo which was involved in a dangerous high speed pursuit along the Pacific Highway north of Maclean that ended dramatically after it's understood road crews and truckies helped to block the highway in a road works zone.

The driver took evasive action only to crash into a Toyota Prado.

As reported in the The Examiner today, the Mondeo had three children and a female passenger on board, all of whom fortunately only suffered minor injuries.

An eyewitness account mentioned the 'maniac' style of driving.

5AM: A HIGH-SPEED chase, which reached speeds of 180kmh, ended in a two-vehicle crash with three children in each vehicle.

A man with three young children in his car, led police on a chase yesterday afternoon.

The man topped speeds of 180kmh as he raced south from Woodburn about 1.20pm yesterday in an allegedly stolen Ford Mondeo before crashing into a Toyota LandCruiser Prado, which also contained three children, just north of the Harwood Bridge.

The three children in the Mondeo, aged one, two, and three, as well as a 28-year-old female passenger, were taken to Maclean Hospital suffering minor injuries.

A Northern NSW Local Health District spokesperson last night said the woman and children remained in a stable condition at the hospital.

A woman and the three children from the LandCruiser were uninjured, although witness Matt Muir said they were crying, clearly traumatised by the crash.

Police said the driver of the Mondeo, which was allegedly stolen on Monday from Logan, south of Brisbane, was taken to Lismore Police Station to be questioned.

Mr Muir, the owner of Yamba Shores Tavern, was travelling back from the Gold Coast yesterday. He said he witnessed some of the pursuit.

Mr Muir said he encountered the Mondeo about halfway between Woodburn and the Harwood Bridge.

"This bloke was right up my rear end in a black Ford Mondeo and I said to my bottle shop manager, Matt, there is something wrong with this bloke; this guy's a lunatic," Mr Muir said.

"Then before I know it he has gone around me over the double white lines ... and I said he's mad, he is going to kill someone."

Mr Muir said they watched the driver's erratic behaviour as the car accelerated away at what he estimated was more than 150km/h.

"He was going around trucks across double white lines; he was all over the road.

"About 10 minutes later suddenly I heard this woosh in my right ear and a Highway Patrol car has gone flying past us, then the Woodburn paddy wagon went past."

As the pursuit was initiated by police from Woodburn, the man was taken to Lismore police station where he was questioned by detectives.

He was refused bail and remained in custody last night and was expected to appear at Lismore Local Court today.
