Jessica Mauboy back to musical roots after acting haul

AFTER a whirlwind tour of the world with The Sapphires, Jessica Mauboy has returned home to her roots.

Despite being an AACTA Award winner with two hit musical films under her belt, Mauboy still doesn't appear to consider herself an actress.

"During filming (for The Sapphires) I had so much support but I had standards. I had to keep up and swim really fast," she told APN.

"I was there with some amazing people like Deborah Mailman, who I'm so inspired by and look up to, and Chris O'Dowd, the whole time I was just in awe of him… to see their acting methods, I loved every moment. It was a whole other world to me.

"I'd definitely love to go off and do something again, but I felt the need to go back to music."

Mauboy released To The End of the Earth, first single off her new forthcoming album, on July 17.

"I was very overwhelmed with what direction I was going to go with," she said.

"My heart was saying make the music you always wanted to do. I had that opportunity to free flow and I did that."

A collaboration with LA songwriter/producers Captain Cuts, To The End of the Earth is a pop song firmly centred on the dance floor.

"I wanted to twist people a little bit in terms of my musical direction," she said.

"I grew up with a lot of '90s house music like Culture Beat and Corona's Rhythm of the Night. Those are some of my top songs on my iPod that I listen to constantly. I never get sick of them."

But her new album will not be full of dance tracks.

"The album is very diverse," she said.

"I'm taking it back to my first album (Been Waiting) where I had a bit of dance and twist of R&B."

The 23-year-old embarks on her first national headline tour in November.

"I'm a little nervous I must say," she said.

"There are all these questions being firing at me, like what kind of lighting do I want, what kind of surface on the stage do I want, would I like to come down from the ceiling? I'm like 'ahh please give me a moment to breathe'.

"I really want to show my other side of business and creating a project."

But don't expect her to be flying from trapeze a la Pink or changing costumes 10 times in between intense dance numbers like Beyonce.

"I'm not that daring," she laughed.

"I think people would freak out with that. I think I'll keep it simple. People know me as just Jess and everyone's seen me from Idol.

"I want to keep surprising and building and going to different levels, but I certainly couldn't do the whole Beyonce or Pink thing. There is a budget."

The tour includes 19 regional shows, which Mauboy said was important to her as someone who grew up in the Northern Territory.

"All the music I've done, I've had incredible support from my own country," she said.

"I think part of this tour is about going to the communities, going back to the towns and visiting them. I've never really been on the road like this, so it's going to be a whole other level of getting to know Australia, getting to know my own country. I can't wait to do that."

Jessica Mauboy's To The End of the Earth Tour plays the Events Centre Caloundra on November 22, Bundaberg's Moncrieff Theatre on November 24, Rockhampton's Pilbeam Theatre on November 26, the Mackay Entertainment Centre on November 27, Toowoomba's Empire Theatre on January 8, the Coffs Harbour Ex Services Club on January 9 and the Lismore Workers Club on January 10.

Tickets go on sale on Monday, August 5, at 2pm through Ticketek.
