Former NRL player jailed for seven and a half years

Craig Field has been sentenced to seven and a half years in jail after the one-punch death of Kelvin Kane.

CRAIG Field has been jailed for at least seven and a half years over the king-hit death of Kelvin Kane at the Kingscliff Beach Hotel in 2012.

The former South Sydney Rabbitohs captain, 42, was originally charged with murder over a fight in the hotel car park on July 15, which ended in the 51-year-old cattle farmers death.

Field's barrister Tony Bellanto QC tried to convince the jury his client's friend, Shaun Fathers, threw the fatal punch to the lower left jaw of Mr Kane, just seconds before Field threw the punch that felled the farmer.

Crown prosecutor Lee Carr argued there was only one punch, thrown by Field that killed Mr Kane.

After a 14 day trial at Lismore Supreme Court a jury of seven men and five women found the former NRL star guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

This afternoon he was sentenced to 10 years in jail, with a non-parole period of seven and a half years.
