AN off-the-cuff question by The Northern Star gathered 130 comments and highlighted some of the Northern Rivers top pub grub venues.

We asked where to find the best pub meal in the Northern Rivers on our Facebook page recently and the Federal Hotel at Alstonville was a clear winner out of more than 35 pubs nominated.

There were 130 responses to our question by Friday and the Federal attracted 19 recommendations.

The Eltham Hotel secured runner-up position with 12 recommendations, while Hotel Brunswick, Casino's Charcoal Inn, The Richmond Hotel in Lismore and Mary G's in Lismore tied third with six.

Ocean Shores Tavern placed in fourth position with five recommendations, while Hotel Gollan Lismore placed in fifth with four.

Federal's head chef Tony Riordan, who's been cooking for 25 years, believed the quality of the pub's base produce and its well-sized meals may have been factors in the win.

He said the pub attracts most of its business from loyal regulars who often impart word-of-mouth recommendations for the iconic pub, which is more than a hundred years old.

Mr Riordan, who has been at the Federal for 18 months, believed his varied experience, including at five-star hotels, gave him a head start in preparing top tucker.

The Federal's most popular dishes, says Mr Riordan, are BBQ Marinated Pork Ribs and Salt and Pepper Prawn and Calamari Salad.
