Pacific Hwy re-opened after fatal crash

UPDATE 2pm: The Pacific Highway has been reopened in Tabbimoble at 1.55pm after a fatal car accident 4km north of the Iluka turn off closed the highway for four hours.

Police from Coffs/Clarence and Richmond Local Area Commands, NSW Ambulance Paramedics and SES crews responded quickly to the incident.

The 23-year-old driver of a northbound Ford Laser died at the scene.

An elderly couple, who were travelling south in their silver-coloured Ford sedan were airlifted to hospital.

Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The occupants of the third vehicle, a black Toyota Camry sedan, were unharmed.

All diversions have been lifted and there are no current delays to motorists in the area.
 

UPDATE 12.20pm: THE Pacific Highway remains closed in both directions near the Iluka Road turn-off in Tabbimoble following a fatal car accident.

Emergency services and RMS traffic crews are on site.

Northbound motorists are advised to use Summerland Way between Grafton and Casino and the Bruxner Highway between Casino and Ballina.

Southbound motorists are advised to use the Bruxner Highway between Ballina and Casino and Summerland Way between Casino and Grafton.

This diversion is suitable for all vehicles, however due to heavy northbound traffic motorists should allow at least 90 minutes additional travel time.

Southbound motorists should allow at least an additional 60 minutes travel time.

The highway will remain closed for some time as police continue their investigations into the accident.
 

10.44am: THE PACIFIC Highway is blocked in both directions north of the Iluka turnoff following a fatal crash this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene of a head-on smash 4km north of the Iluka turnoff at Tabbimoble at about 9.45am.

When police arrived at the scene they found the driver of one of the cars had died and the driver of the other car was trapped.

A Traffic Management Centre spokeswoman said northbound motorists are advised to use Summerland Way between Grafton and Casino and the Bruxner Highway between Casino and Ballina.

"Southbound motorists are advised to use the Bruxner Highway between Ballina and Casino and Summerland Way between Casino and Grafton," the spokeswoman said.

"This diversion is suitable for all vehicles and will add approximately one hour travel time."

"Due to the serious nature of the accident it's likely that the highway will be closed for some time."
