Delay in nurse’s murder trial

TOXICOLOGY reports are still outstanding on two alleged victims of former St Andrew's Nursing Home Ballina nurse Megan Jean Haines.

Haines, 46, who is in custody at Sydney's Silverwater Women's Correctional Centre, is charged with two counts of murder and one count of assault.

The charges relate to the deaths of Marie Darragh, 82, and Isobella Spencer, 77, plus the alleged assault of an 88-year-old woman at the nursing home on May 10.

Police allege Haines injected Ms Darragh and Ms Spencer with fatal doses of insulin and attempted to inject the third nursing home resident.

Haines is yet to enter a plea to the charges, and did not apply for bail.

Yesterday Prosecutor Ms Coxon told the court there were some quite important items outstanding from the brief of evidence.

Ms Coxon said a toxicologist's report, which was expected to take two weeks, would allow the autopsies on the women's bodies to be completed.

She also said an endocrinologist's report on the bodies was expected to take several weeks.

Ms Darragh's daughter, Charli Matterson, said she would come to every mention of Haines's court case until justice is done.

"We are always going to be here for mum but now we have to wait, until December 2, for more progress," she said.

Magistrate Jeff Linden ordered the brief of evidence against Haines to be served on the defence by November 18, and adjourned her matters until December 2.
