A BYRON Bay woman who died after a crash on Skinners Shoot Road was standing up through the car's sun roof when it ran off the road.

Former Northern Star journalist Ava Benny-Morrison, reporting for AAP, says Alex Ryder, 29, had been taking a drive with her best friend when the Honda Accord left the road and crashed into a tree, leaving her with horrific injuries.

Police have said nearby residents came out to help the pair until emergency services arrived.

Ms Ryder was taken to Byron Bay Hospital in a critical condition before being airlifted to the Gold Coast University Hospital, where she passed away on Wednesday.
