"Brainless" vandals smash sign designed to save lives

A NEW surf safety sign - the first of 40 designed to save lives at Byron Shire Beaches - has been torn down by vandals.

Posting on his Surf Safe Byron Facebook page, Max Pendergast, who is behind the signs being put up by Byron Shire Council, said the sign had only been up a few days before being reduced to "trash".

"I give up!!!! That surf safety sign that was only erected last Friday has become nothing more than trash," Mr Pendergast posted this morning.

"We went for a beach walk this morning only to find that some brainless turkey had decided to smash it, I mean what goes through the minds (I say that lightly because I doubt if they have one).

"What sort of people is this town attracting????

"I have for a long time been passionate about surf safety, with Surf Safe Byron and was quite excited to see some results of my efforts but now honestly I don't think I'll bother anymore."

Speaking last week, just after the sign was installed, Mr Pendergast said it had been carefully designed to be easily understood by anyone regardless of what language they spoke.

The sign warns readers about the dangers of rips and advises what to do if they are caught in one.

At the time, Byron councillor Paul Spooner said the council intended to put up about 40 of the signs at all Byron Shire's most popular beaches.
